Acupuncture

History

For thousands of years, the Chinese have observed the life processes and relationships between man and his/her environment. From this observation, the art of Chinese medicine has developed its own distinctive vocabulary and diagnosis to describe innumerable subtle body patterns and disease identification.

With the development of modern medicine, many practitioners of western medical practice, such as, but not restricted to doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists, now include acupuncture as a procedure within their practice. This approach generally relies on a western medical diagnosis, utilisation of a prescription of points, thereby applying acupuncture as a procedure.
What can it treat?

Acupuncture can be used on a wide range of symptoms as well as promote well-being and preventative health. It is used with children as well as adults. Conditions that acupuncture can treat include addictions (like smoking), allergies, arthritis, back pain, circulatory problems, colds and flu, digestive ailments, eye problems, headaches, hormone imbalances, insomnia, mental and emotional problems, migraine, muscle pain, respiratory conditions, rheumatism, skin conditions, stress related illnesses and urinary infections.

How is it used?

A consultation with an acupuncturist begins with a complete physiological and psychological evaluation. All relevant information, including the symptoms as well as the patients other general characteristics, are gathered and woven together until it forms what chance medicine calls a 'Pattern of disharmony.' A person who is well, or 'in Harmony', does not have the distressing symptoms; they exhibit mental, physical and spiritual balance. When that person is ill, the symptom is only one part of a complete bodily imbalance that can be seen in other aspects of his or her behaviour.

The acupuncture points will be selected from this overview and the acupuncturist can stimulate acupuncture points by several methods, the most commonly known is fine needles (disposable), but other popular forms include heat (moxibustion), cups, magnets and lasers.

Choosing a therapist

You should only have acupuncture from a qualified therapist who has completed a fulltime three or four year course and is a member of a professional association.

Remember to always speak to your acupuncturist about any previous or ongoing illness or health problems and any history of disease in your family prior to treatment.
